Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, on Tuesday adopted measures to prevent flooding by distributing essential working materials to 160 Community Development Associations across the state’s eight metropolitan local governments.

The objective of the distribution, according to a press statement issued by the governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Tofa, is to bolster the city’s drainage systems and promote sustainable urban development.

Yusuf, who stressed the importance of effective drainage systems, noted that besides its critical role in preventing flooding, it also enhances public health, improves environmental quality, and increases urban livability.

The governor highlighted the involvement of self-help groups in this initiative, recognising their significant role in addressing local challenges in their respective communities.

“I’m confident and hopeful that providing these materials will facilitate practical solutions and create lasting impacts.”

“The expected outcomes of this initiative include improved drainage infrastructure in targeted communities; reduced flooding and waterlogging incidents; enhanced public health safety; strengthened community cohesion and increased participation in governance.”

Yusuf solicited the collaboration of all stakeholders towards achieving these shared goals, ensuring that the working materials are maximally utilised.

Additionally, he called on development partners and the private sector to support this initiative through financial and technical assistance, underscoring the government’s commitment to building a resilient and sustainable city.

The items distributed include 600 wheelbarrows, shovels, rain boots, diggers, fork-shovels, rakes, pans, hand gloves, and 150 first aid boxes.

Furthermore, the governor warned against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage systems and other waterways that impede the free flow of water during the rainy season.
