The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has declared a new date for the conduct of local government elections.

KANSIEC announced in a statement issued on Friday that the new date is now set for October 26.

Previously, the elections were slated for November 30.

During a press conference on Friday, the KANSIEC Chairman, Prof. Sani Malumfashi, stated that this adjustment aligns with the recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the autonomy of Local Governments.

“In recognition and conformity with the recent Supreme Court decision, the mutual agreement between States and Federal Governments and upon the expiration of October deadline on Local Government Financial Autonomy, the Commission is justifiably impelled to reschedule the already scheduled Local Government Election to 26th October 2024 as against 30th November 2024.

“The commission, therefore, implored you the stakeholders to understand the compelling situation and give the commission your most deserving support and cooperation,” he said.

Malumfashi stated that, according to the updated schedule, campaign activities are set to begin on September 1 and will conclude at midnight on October 26.

He noted that the party primaries and the submission of candidate names to the commission will take place from September 3 to September 26.

Furthermore, he mentioned that the sale of nomination forms will start on September 15 and will end on September 26, with the submission of all completed forms scheduled to occur from September 27 to October 8.

“Verification of candidates by the commission and submission of names of political parties agents starts on October 9 and stops on October 14,” he said.

He revealed that the commission plans to announce the election results on Sunday, October 27.

Malumfashi further indicated that the commission has scheduled November 9 for the rerun elections.

In July 2024, the Chief Whip of the Senate, Ali Ndume, remarked that the most significant accomplishment of President Bola Tinubu since taking office in 2023 has been the attainment of financial autonomy for local governments.
