In a bid to address the transportation challenges faced by students of tertiary institutions in the state, Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has handed over 12 shuttle buses to the Ministry for Higher Education.
In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, he explained that “the buses will be used for the daily shuttle of students across the 44 local government areas of the state.”
Arewa PUNCH reports that the buses were recovered from associates of the previous administration who had taken them out of Kano.
After their retrieval, the state government, through the Ministry of Transportation, refurbished the vehicles to full functionality, ensuring they could serve the students effectively.
“We have recovered, refurbished, and reintroduced these buses to assist our students in tertiary institutions by alleviating the transportation difficulties they face,” Gov Yusuf had earlier stated.
The governor added that students benefiting from the service will enjoy an 80 per cent discount on the fare.
He sternly warned the bus managers and drivers to handle the vehicles responsibly, ensuring they remained in good condition.
The governor also cautioned them against engaging in any behaviour detrimental to the smooth operation of the service.
He urged the students to be orderly and cooperate with the state government in maintaining the vehicles to ensure their longevity and optimal use.
In his remarks, the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Higher Education, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, expressed gratitude to Yusuf for the thoughtful gesture.
He assured the public that the buses would be used judiciously to achieve the intended purpose.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Transportation, Alhaji Ibrahim Ali Namadi Dala, stated that the ministry had refurbished the vehicles to meet global standards, ensuring their roadworthiness and efficiency.
Speaking on behalf of parents, the former Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Governing Council of North-West University, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar described the gesture as timely.
He prayed for God Almighty to grant Governor Yusuf another term in office, acknowledging his good intentions and efforts to advance the state.
