Kano votes N99bn supplementary budget for new minimum wage

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, On Tuesday, wrote the state House of Assembly seeking approval of N99, 221, 503, 569. 90 supplementary budget to enable the state to pay workers the N70,000 new minimum wage.

The governor’s letter was read on the floor of the House during Tuesday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.

Reading the letter, Falgore noted that the governor’s request was  pursuant to Section 122 (a) (b) of the 1999 Constitution in order to accelerate and execute priority projects aimed at improving the well-being of the citizens in the state.

According to him, from the supplementary budget, N33,761,174,555.64 has been earmarked for personnel cost, N34,492,888,103.44 for overhead cost and N30,969,440,940.80 for capital expenditure.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the presentation of the letter to the House, the Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Shanono, said, “The initial budget of the state for 2024 is N437, 338, 312, 787. If you merge the original budget with the supplementary budget, passed into law, it will bring the 2024 budget to the tune of N536, 559, 816, 357.84.

“The supplementary budget will also be used to cover  the N70,000 new minimum wage payment.”

Shanono reiterated the government’s commitment to infrastructural development, human capital development, and improving the health and educational sectors.

Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Nassarawa Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, Yusuf Aliyu, presented a motion calling on the state government to invest in sports development by rehabilitating the Gwagwarwa mini stadium.

He explained that it would spark the interest of the youth in sports and help to check the festering use of illicit of drugs in the state.
