Karate: Nigeria eyes more global triumph after C’wealth success

Nigeria’s karate technical director Dave Jegede says the country will target more international success following Rita Ogene and Israel Jegede’s bronze medal-winning performances at the 11th Commonwealth Karate Championship in Durban, South Africa, The PUNCH reports.

Ogene claimed bronze in the women’s -68kg category, while Israel Jegede secured his medal in the men’s -84kg category as Nigeria was represented by five athletes alongside two coaches, one referee, a board member, and the Secretary-General at the championship.

“Nigeria proved a point at this championship. Our athletes have shown they are capable of competing at the highest levels. This result sends a strong message that Nigeria can be a force to reckon with in international karate,” Jegede said.

“Rita and Israel deserve commendation for their determination and skill. They ensured that Nigeria earned recognition and left with medals, which is a testament to their hard work and commitment.”

Karate Federation of Nigeria President Silas Agara expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting the federation’s commitment to developing the sport across the country.

“These medals are just the beginning of what we can achieve in karate. We have immense talent across Nigeria, and with proper support and exposure to international competitions, our athletes can compete with the best in the world,” Agara told our correspondent.

“The federation is working to create more opportunities for our karatekas to participate in international tournaments. We believe regular exposure at this level is crucial for their development.”

Constance Abode (-61kg) and Kingsley Fineface (-67Kg) narrowly missed out on bronze medals after losing their respective medal matches, but the technical director remains optimistic about Nigeria’s future in the sport.

“If we attend international championships regularly and continue to develop our athletes, there is no doubt Nigeria can become world beaters in the sport,” Jegede added.

“Under the guidance of President Agara, the federation has continued to make significant strides, and we are seeing the fruits of that vision.”
