Eight persons have been arrested by the Lagos State Government for open defecation in the Berger area of the state.

The action comes amid several warnings by the state government against the unhygienic practice in the state.

The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the arrest of the individuals – eight men – in a video shared on X.com on Monday.

He said the arrest was carried out by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, whose vehicles have been stationed in the area since the state government commenced cleaning the median along the Berger section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The median had been largely defaced by faeces and urine which made the environment uncomfortable for the public.

The government cleaned up the median last month and vowed to prosecute violators.

Wahab wrote, “During a monitoring and enforcement operation last (Sunday) night by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps Task Force team, eight individuals were arrested at Berger for open defecation and urination.”

In late August, nine individuals were also caught engaging in open defecation in the area and were arrested by Task Force officials.
