Lagos State government has described the death of four persons killed by flood in Anambra State as tragic.

Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Monday, called for collaborative efforts between state governments to address the issue of flooding across the country.

Wahab, in reaction to news of four persons swept away by flood in Anambra at the weekend, said the devastation caused by floods was a stark reminder of the growing threat posed by climate change.

It is with deep concern I offer my heartfelt condolences for the tragic loss of four lives due to the recent flooding in Anambra State. The news was disturbing to say the least.

“The devastation caused by these floods is a stark reminder of the growing threat posed by climate change. Its effects transcend borders, tribes, and creeds, impacting us all,” Wahab said via his X account.

He added that while weather cannot be controlled, efforts must be made to mitigate its impact. He called for proper waste disposal and avoiding construction in flood plains.

Wahab added, “While we cannot control the weather, we can work together to mitigate its impact. Responsible environmental practices, such as proper waste disposal and avoiding constructions in flood plains, are crucial steps in this fight.

“This is the pivot of our messaging; that we understand the challenges of flooding and work together to mitigate it as we continue building resilience infrastructures for the future.

“In this difficult time, my thoughts and prayers are with the government of Anambra State, most importantly, families and loved ones of the deceased. May they find strength and solace in the days ahead.”
