The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, on Monday, commemorated the 2024 World Humanitarian Day with a road walk awareness campaign, advocating women empowerment.

The event, according to a statement shared on Instagram on Monday, held in Ikeja, the state capital and brought together officials from the ministry, Non-Governmental Organisations, and representatives from registered women-focused groups.

At the event, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Dada, emphasised the importance of women empowerment and support for vulnerable families, stressing the need for unity in the face of challenges.

She said, “Today, we gather to observe World Humanitarian Day. We stand here in solidarity with those who need it most. I’m reminded constantly that people across the globe confront hardships ranging from conflict and displacement to poverty and inequality.

“These challenges test the very fabric of our society. However, in the face of adversity, let us know that the act of humanity is essential to acknowledge that what really matters is not merely the circumstances people find themselves in, but rather a collective response to those circumstances.”

She highlighted that women make up the majority of those living in poverty and are often the first to bear the brunt of crises.

“Poverty alleviation and empowerment of women are not just policies. They are humanitarian imperatives as women make up the majority of people living in poverty, and often the first to bear the brunt of crisis.

“Their voices, experiences and needs must be at the forefront of our interventions. When we invest in women, we uplift entire communities, paving the way for a more equitable and just society,” she added.

Dada maintained that the theme ‘No Matter What, Humanitarian Delivers’ recognises the importance of compassion, empathy, and action.

She also called on the government, organisations, and individuals to prioritise human dignity above all else.

She said, “Humanitarian actions is not just the responsibility of a select few. It rests in our hands. Each small acts of kindness, every gesture of support, and any effort to raise awareness can ignite hope and change lives.

“Let us stand firm in our commitment to foster environments where women, children and vulnerable individuals can thrive.”

The statement revealed that the ministry has registered 257 women-focused NGOs and certified 140 NGOs, providing grants to numerous organisations.

It added, “The Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation is committed to acts of humanity. It coordinates activities and has so far registered 257 women-focused NGOs till date and certified 140 NGOs.

“Also, a lot of NGOs have benefited from the ministry through grants. As we commemorate this important day, let us remember the heroes who worked tirelessly in the face of great challenges like aids workers, community leaders and activists who embodied the spirit of humanity.”

Highlights of the event included a walk from Shoprite Bus stop Alausa to the Lagos State House of Assembly ground and back to the Secretariat Alausa, promoting awareness and solidarity for women’s empowerment and humanitarian causes.
