The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Sports Commission, will hold its inaugural Individual Boxing Club Championship from October 21 to 27 at the Bishop Aggey Senior Secondary School, Mushin, Lagos.

The seven-day tournament aims to unearth new talents, encourage mass participation of clubs, and promote inclusiveness while serving as a platform for pugilists to intensify their preparations for upcoming national championships.

Boxers from various registered clubs across the state will compete in 13 male and 12 female weight categories. The male divisions range from 48 kg to 92+ kg, while the female categories span from 48 kg to 81+ kg. Each coach is permitted to register one boxer per weight class.

The concept of the tournament is to encourage clubs across the state and empower the youth, in line with grassroots sports development.

Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, emphasised the championship’s alignment with the commission’s mission of grassroots sports development.

“This championship has come to light of day through our relentless efforts to drive sports development at the grassroots level,” Fatodu said.

The tournament will be a knockout format, with defeated boxers exiting automatically, while winners in each weight category will advance to subsequent phases under the supervision of state referees and judges, ensuring fair and well-coordinated officiating standards.

While Mushin hosts the pilot edition due to its high concentration of boxers, future tournaments are planned across all five divisions of Lagos State, with Ajegunle slated as the next venue.

The Lagos State Sports Commission views this initiative as part of its broader strategy to promote physical activities in communities, shape youth development, and bring competitive sports to the grassroots level.
