The Lagos State Government has arrested 87 suspects at dark spots in the Ikoyi and Lekki areas of the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Tuesday.
He explained that the operation was jointly carried out by the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps.
The commissioner confirmed that the arrests were made on Monday night.
“In a joint operation between the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps yesterday (Monday) night, 87 individuals were arrested during the raid on the dark spots at Ikoyi, Lekki, and environ,” Wahab wrote on X.
Concerns often mount during raids on dark spots as residents fear that innocent persons were usually part of the victims of the arrest.
In July, some residents of Agege in Lagos expressed fear that innocent residents may be arrested and punished unjustly in a raid of criminal hideouts by the state police command.
The residents expressed their concerns to our correspondent in separate interviews while monitoring a raid operation carried out by the CP Tactical Team along the Agege rail line and its environs.
Our correspondent who monitored the raid observed that no fewer than 10 persons among whom were passers-by and individuals suspected to be questionable were arrested.
The Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, earlier visited the rail line on a fact-finding mission, following complaints about the activities of petty robbers.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed in a statement that the CP directed a rejig of security in the area.
