• Becomes fifth Nigerian to play for Serie A side

Lazio have confirmed the signing of Nigerian midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru from Hatayspor on a season-long loan, with an obligation to buy if he impresses, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 23-year-old, who shone in the Turkish Super Lig last season, scoring nine goals and providing six assists, passed his medical in Rome on Friday and completed the necessary paperwork on Saturday, kick-starting his Serie A career.

The Manchester City academy graduate, who also had a stint with Sheffield Wednesday, expressed his excitement about the move as he looks to make a significant impact at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio’s official announcement on Saturday was met with enthusiasm from fans and analysts alike.

The Nigeria international recently made his debut for the Super Eagles, scoring against South Africa in a World Cup qualifier, further enhancing his reputation.

Reports suggest that Lazio secured the talented midfielder for an initial loan fee of around €2 million, with a further €4 million to be paid to make the deal permanent if certain conditions are met.

The total deal, including potential add-ons, could rise to €7 million, showcasing Lazio’s commitment to integrating young talent into their squad.

Lazio’s manager, Igor Tudor, who took over after Maurizio Sarri’s departure, has been keen on reinforcing the team’s midfield, and Dele-Bashiru fits perfectly into Tudor’s vision of a dynamic and creative midfield unit.

The Nigerian’s versatility, capable of playing both as an attacking and central midfielder, will be crucial as Lazio aims for a strong showing in domestic and European competitions.

Dele-Bashiru joins a notable list of Nigerian players who have donned the Lazio jersey. Ogenyi Onazi, Stephen Makinwa, Seyi Adeleke, and Daniel Ola have all had spells with the Italian club, with Onazi being the most prominent, making 110 appearances and scoring seven goals between 2012 and 2016.

Dele-Bashiru’s journey to Lazio has been one of steady progress. Born in Germany, he started his youth career at Manchester City before moving to Sheffield Wednesday, where he made a mark with his performances in the Championship. His move to Hatayspor last season saw him flourish in the Turkish Super Lig, attracting interest from several European clubs, including PSV Eindhoven and AC Milan.

Lazio fans are optimistic about Dele-Bashiru’s arrival, hoping he can replicate his impressive form from Turkey in Italy. The Nigerian midfielder is expected to bring flair, vision, and a goal-scoring threat to Lazio’s midfield, contributing to their ambitions in Serie A and beyond.

With the deal finalised, Dele-Bashiru’s focus now shifts to making an immediate impact at Lazio. As he joins the ranks of the Biancazzurri, the young Nigerian midfielder is poised to become an integral part of Lazio’s quest for success in the upcoming season.
