A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee, Tolu Bankole, has advocated for the integration of individuals with disabilities into local government bodies to foster equality and combat discrimination.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday, Bankole argued that the integration of individuals with disabilities should begin with the upcoming local government elections nationwide.
The APC leader contended that this inclusion is not only a matter of fairness and equality but also a crucial move towards enhancing the country’s democratic processes and governance frameworks.
He said, “I have no doubt that the leadership of governors in this matter can set a powerful example and contribute significantly to the realization of an inclusive and equitable political landscape in Nigeria. This will equally uphold the rights and dignity of Persons With Disabilities.
“The Discrimination Against PWDs (Prohibition) Act, 2018, offers a comprehensive framework for their protection and inclusion in all spheres of public life, including political participation. Specifically, Section 25 of the Act mandates the right of PWDs to participate in political activities on an equal basis with others. It explicitly prohibits any form of discrimination against PWDs in electoral processes and ensures their right to vote and be voted for.
“I urge your Excellencies to take proactive steps to ensure that PWDs are not only included but actively encouraged to participate in the upcoming local government elections. This can be achieved through your overt support to PWD candidates, mentorship and appointment into leadership positions.”
Speaking further, the APC chieftain called on Nigerians to show caution during the scheduled nationwide demonstrations.
Acknowledging the necessity of voicing complaints and seeking responsibility, the PWD leader emphasized the importance of making certain that the public’s behaviour doesn’t turn into aggression or disorder.
“Peaceful and constructive dialogue remains the most effective way to bring about meaningful change,” he stated.
Naija News reports that Bankole’s request was made two weeks following a ruling by the Supreme Court that confirmed the local governments’ right to directly receive monthly funds from the federal account.
The highest court bestowed complete independence on the 774 local governments nationwide, as per the 1999 Constitution (revised).
In a unanimous verdict, the seven-member panel determined that it is unlawful and unconstitutional for state governors to keep or receive funds designated for local governments.
