LG Autonomy: Kaduna Assembly Repeals Laws Establishing Metropolitan Authorities

1 month ago 32

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has revoked the laws that established the Zaria Metropolitan Authority, Kafanchan Municipal Authority, and the Kaduna Capital Territory Authority.

Naija News reports that this action was taken in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling on local governments in Nigeria.

The Speaker, Dahiru Liman, made the announcement following the presentation of a report by Mahmud Lawal, the Chairman of a Joint Committee.

The report emphasized the need to bring the state’s laws in line with the Supreme Court’s decision and the Nigerian Constitution.

These laws, which were put into effect in 2021, had created the metropolitan authorities to oversee specific functions in their respective areas.

However, it was determined that these functions should be carried out by local governments, as per the Supreme Court’s ruling and a review of the Constitution.

Mahmud Lawal, who represents Zaria City Constituency and serves as the Chairman of the Joint Committee, clarified that the repeal was necessary to allow local government authorities to effectively carry out their duties now that they have gained autonomy.

Additionally, the House repealed Fire and Public Safety Law No.20 of 2018 and replaced it with the Kaduna State Fire and Public Safety Law, 2024, with the aim of enhancing fire safety and public safety in the state.
