Ahead of the local government poll in Kano, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on Tuesday introduced fees for aspirants seeking to contest chairmanship and councilorship seats under the party.
According to the party, chairmanship aspirants would pay N600,000, while councilorship aspirants are meant to pay N200,000 to the party.
The NNPP’s decision came a few days after the State Independent Electoral Commission fixed N10 million and N5 million for chairmanship and councilorship respectively as nomination form fees.
Addressing journalists at the party secretariat, the state chairman of the party, Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa, said prospective chairmanship aspirants would pay a half-million-naira nomination fee, while the expression of interest form stands at N100,000.
Dungurawa revealed that in addition, the party has purchased WAEC scratch cards to verify the academic records of prospective aspirants to detect infractions.
Sulaiman Dungurawa said, “We have fixed N500,000 nomination fees for prospective chairmanship aspirants, while the expression of interest form stands at N100,000.
“Similarly, we have also fixed N150,000 nomination form fees for councillors, while the expression of interest is fixed at N50,000.”
The chairman also added that the party had purchased WAEC scratch cards to verify the academic records of aspirants, “while we are also relying on records from NDLEA to ascertain their drug and criminal history.”
He said, “We, as a people’s party, are fully conscious of the economic downturn occasioned by FG’s policies and the need to soften the ground for participatory democracy.”
The chairman therefore directed interested aspirants to resign their civil service appointments by the end of August 2024, to enable them to meet the deadline set by the State Electoral Commission KANSIEC guidelines.
Dungurawa said, “We don’t want to create or leave loopholes in our party, which is why we have taken drastic measures against anybody that is contesting. We want to give the citizens of Kano people with a sound background who will help them out of their economic and social predicaments.”
