Governor of Oyo State Seyi Makinde, the attorney-general of the federation and minister for justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), a former governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon Adeoye Aribasoye and legal icon, Chief Adeniyi Akintola (SAN) are among the dignitaries expected at the 6th Justice Aderemi Annual Lecture Series (JAALS).

The 6th edition of the JAALS, an annual Lecture Series celebrating the legacy of the revered jurist of the Supreme Court and former member of the National Judicial Council (NJC), Hon. Justice Pius Olayiwola Aderemi, will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Aare Afe Babalola Bar Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan by 10 am.

In a statement jointly issued by the director and secretary to the Board of Trustees of the foundation, Mr Tolu Aderemi, and the late jurist’s first son, Mr Kunle Aderemi, announced that Fayemi will deliver the keynote address on the theme, “Bicameralism and Good Governance: An Oxymoron?”

The statement added that Fagbemi will serve as the chairman, while the Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency Eng. Seyi Makinde and the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima, will be the Special Guest of Honour and Chief Host, respectively.

The statement also noted that Chief Adeniyi Akintola SAN will chair the Reactor Panel, with the speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, the special adviser to Oyo State governor on security, CP Fatai Owoseni (Rtd), a foremost legal practitioner, Mrs Titi Akinlawon, SAN and the immediate past Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ibadan Branch, as panellists.

On his part, Mr Tolu Aderemi noted that the theme for the 6th lecture was intentionally curated to interrogate the value of maintaining a bicameral legislature in Nigeria vis-a-vis its developmental strides (if any). The conference aims to debate this dual legislative structure and recommend its outcome to the federal government.

The statement also noted that the event is expected to attract members of the Bench, the Inner and Utter Bar, the organised private sector and the general public, explaining that the annual lecture is organised to provide a platform for the convergence of minds towards ensuring good governance in Nigeria.
