Manchester United have confirmed Ruben Amorim's appointment as their next coach, barely a week after Erik ten Hag's sacking.
The Sporting CP coach will start his new job on November 11 at the start of this month's international break.
Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has faced Amorim's Sporting a few times and has reacted to his appointment.
Amorim's task at Man United
The Red Devils sit 14th in the Premier League with three wins from nine matches, and the young Portuguese coach will be tasked with improving the situation.
The 20-time English champions are hoping the 39-year-old can be the coach to lead them back to the top after a decade of mediocrity.
One of Amorim's major tasks is improving the team's league performance. Erik ten Hag led the club to 11 Premier League wins in 2024.
They also suffered some humiliating defeats, such as losing 7-0 to Liverpool, 4-0 to Brentford and Crystal Palace, and 3-0 to Bournemouth.
What Guardiola said about Amorim
Amorim's Sporting have faced Guardiola's Manchester City twice, losing once and drawing the other. Amorim's side suffered a 5-0 defeat to Man City in 2022, per Transfermarkt.
Guardiola has wished Amorim well as he begins his journey at Old Trafford. Man City and Sporting meet in the Champions League on Tuesday, November 5.
"Welcome to United, to England. I congratulate him, [we will speak] next Tuesday," he said via Manchester Evening News. The Spanish coach recalled his team's meeting with Sporting.
"All I can talk about is the experience of playing twice against Ruben’s Sporting Lisbon team, one or two seasons ago, and the pressure was really, really good. So a high manager," he said.Amorim's first match will be against Ipswich Town on November 24.
