Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi believes that Arsenal forward, Kai Havertz disrespected the Blues’ fans during the North London derby last weekend.
During the recent 1-1 Premier League draw at Stamford Bridge, Havertz, a former Chelsea player, believed he had scored for the Gunners. Despite facing boos from the Chelsea supporters throughout the match, he responded by gesturing for the crowd to be quiet.
Mikel Obi expressed that, regardless of the circumstances, such gestures can be perceived as disrespectful to the fans of a club where a player has previously contributed significantly, including winning major trophies like the Champions League and Club World Cup.
In a discussion on the Obi One podcast, Obi-Mikel reflected, “Looking back at it, it’s understandable that adrenaline and passion can influence actions in the heat of the moment. However, showing respect to a former club and its fans is crucial.
“When I played for Chelsea, I faced challenges with fan appreciation at times, but my love for the club remained strong, and I focused on my responsibilities on the pitch.
“If a player returns to face their former club and scores, it’s important to celebrate in a way that acknowledges the connection with the fans, rather than dismissing them. While I may not know all the reasons behind Havertz’s actions, I believe that maintaining respect is essential for both players and supporters.”
