Military takeover advocates pushing Nigeria backward — Ex-envoy

The immediate past Nigerian Ambassador to Mexico, Mr Adejare Bello, has stated that those calling for a military takeover in response to the current hardships in the country are seeking to set Nigeria back.

Speaking in Ede, Osun State, on Sunday, Bello also dismissed rumours that he was planning to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party, the political platform he used to enter the Osun State House of Assembly, where he served as Speaker for eight years.

The former Speaker, who hosted leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress at his residence, acknowledged that although the situation in the country is challenging, people should be patient with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

“Some people are so myopic that they are calling for a military takeover. Are we trying to set the country back? May God forbid that. Tinubu has been given a four-year mandate, and before he completes his tenure, Nigeria will be better.

“It is a simple fact and the truth that things are hard, and the President himself has never pretended otherwise. Things are extremely difficult for Nigerians, but the rot that has been in place since 1960 is what Tinubu is trying to correct.

“I am very sure Nigeria will become a better country that everyone will be proud of, but we must be patient with him. Things will change for the better. The situation would have worsened if he had not taken some of the steps he did,” Bello said.

Acknowledging that the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, is his friend, Bello added, “We (he and Adeleke) do meet sometimes, but that does not mean I am going to the PDP. My people and I are still solid in the APC, and we have no reason whatsoever to leave the party.

“I want to use this medium to dispel rumours that I am planning to return to the Peoples Democratic Party because the incumbent governor of Osun State is from Ede and also my friend. There is no iota of truth in it.”
