2024 has been an exceptional year for Nigerian artistes, with several high-profile album releases that have gathered millions of listeners worldwide. The growing global popularity of Afrobeats has shone a well-deserved spotlight on the boundless creativity emerging from the Nigerian music industry.
According to data from Album Talks, here are the top five most streamed Nigerian albums on Spotify so far in 2024:
1. The Year I Turned 21 by Ayra Starr – 501 million streams
Released on May 30, 2024, this 15-track album features collaborations with Nigerian stars. They are Asake and Seyi Vibez. As well as international acts like Rauw Alejandro, Giveon, Coco Jones, and Anitta. Ayra Starr’s lyrics in the album tell about her rise to fame and the wealth she has accumulated. Also, she explores her journey with love, and her decisions to cut out negative people and situations from her life.
2. Born in the Wild by Tems – 252 million streams
Tems’ debut studio album, Born in the Wild, only features two guest appearances from Asake and J. Cole. In an interview, Tems explained that the album is a reflection of her personal experiences, describing her journey as akin to emerging from a “wilderness” to become the artiste she is today.
3. Jiggy Forever by Young Jonn – 115 million streams
Released on April 12, 2024, this 16-track album has features from the likes of Blaqbonez, Sean Paul, Don Jazzy, Zlatan, and Ya Levis. The standout single Big Big Things featuring Kizz Daniel and Seyi Vibez has become a viral sensation on TikTok and a summer anthem in clubs and parties.
4. RnB by Ruger and BNXN – 62 million streams
This collaborative project between the two artistes, who previously had an online feud due to fan comparisons, features 7 tracks showcasing their R&B styles.
5. HEIS by Rema – 62 million streams
Rema’s latest album, HEIS, has 11 tracks and features from Shallipopi and Odumodublvck. The album’s promotion began with the release of a gothic-style logo, which Rema later revealed was derived from the Greek word “εἷς” (heis), meaning “number one.” Rema has taken a gothic style and aesthetic with the HEIS album rollout.
