A large police presence has been seen in Southend

An MP has urged residents to stay away from a city centre due to an "ongoing incident".

Posts on social media have commented on a large police presence in Southend-on-Sea in Essex.

David Burton-Sampson, the Labour MP for Southend West and Leigh, posted on Facebook: "We are aware of the ongoing incident in Southend city centre and the Jubilee Beach area.

"We encourage all residents to keep away from the area for the time being."

On Tuesday, Essex Police put a dispersal order in place on Southend seafront. It gives officers more powers to tackle anti-social behaviour.

The order remains in force until 16:00 BST on Wednesday.

Previous dispersal orders have been put in place in the city in response to concerns about the behaviour of groups of young people who have gathered on the seafront.

Essex Police has been approached for comment.
