Popular comedian, skit maker and social media influencer, Isaac Olayiwola popularly known as Layi Wasabi shared a memorable childhood experience that sheds light on the disciplinary practices and educational expectations in some Nigerian households.

Wasabi, who is currently in the United Kingdom, spoke in the 90s Baby Show podcast released on Monday via YouTube.

He recounted a particular incident when asked if his next-door neighbour could beat him.

“I never had that but I had uncles flog me. I had one that travelled to flog me. It was like a 2-hour drive,” he said.

The comedian explained that the situation arose from academic concerns.

“My mom always wanted me to do medicine or something in the Sciences,” he said.

Wasabi described the educational system at the time, where students in Senior Secondary 1 (SS1) would study all courses before being placed according to their strengths.

“I passed biology and chemistry but I failed physics and I had stronger subjects in the art department, so it was recommended that I did Art,” Wasabi explained.

This outcome upset his mother, who felt he wasn’t taking his studies seriously enough.

In response, she contacted one of Wasabi’s uncles, who promptly said, “Don’t worry, I’ll be in Oshogbo tomorrow.”

Wasabi, who explained jovially, vividly recalled the day his uncle arrived. “I was the one who opened the gate for him, and assisted him to carry his load from his car.”

The situation turned serious when his uncle requested to see his report card.

Wasabi recounted his uncle’s words, “You failed physics and you didn’t do well in mathematics, lie down there.”

At that moment, Wasabi said, “I knew where my fate was then.”

In May, Layi Wasabi, celebrated for his distinctive humour and towering presence, secured his first Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) win in the Best Digital Content Creator category.

The prestigious ceremony, held at the Eko Hotel & Suites in Lagos on Saturday, showcased his exceptional talent and creativity, positioning him alongside other notable nominees like Elozonam and Taaoma.
