The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) in Katsina State has warned of a potential strike in the coming two weeks unless the state government improves security measures at hospitals located in insecure areas.

In a declaration made by the State Secretary, Nr. Idris Bello Idris, the union voiced significant concern regarding the kidnapping of one of its members, Nr. Yusuf Mairuwa, who was taken while performing his duties at Kankara General Hospital on the night of Tuesday, January 14, 2025. The union disclosed that it had dispatched a formal letter to the authorities, calling for prompt actions to ensure safety at hospitals in the impacted regions.

The announcement also stated that the union is actively engaging with the unit chairman of the Kankara Branch and the relatives of Nr. Yusuf Mairuwa. The union is working closely with the national secretariat to address the issue quickly.

Additionally, the union has directed all unit branches to hold an emergency congress to ready members for a potential strike should the government not guarantee their safety in the next two weeks. Nonetheless, this instruction is not applicable to the Kankara Branch members, who have been instructed to leave the hospital until further notice.

The union expressed gratitude to its members for their prayers, support, and unity, assuring them that they would persist in advocating for the essential measures to ensure their safety. They likewise highlighted the need to tackle security concerns carefully to avoid undue escalation, while continuing to prioritize the safe release of Nr. Yusuf.

In summary, the union conveyed heartfelt condolences and unity with all its members and expressed gratitude for their ongoing support and collaboration.
