The Nasarawa State Government has announced that it has finalized preparations to carry out the screening of employees across the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) to determine the true count of workers.

Mr. Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Abdullahi Sule for Public Affairs, made this announcement during a press conference on Friday in Lafia.

Ahemba stated that the state Economic Council had formed a five-person committee to conduct the exercise for effective developmental planning.

He stated that the state had completely adhered to the autonomy of LGAs and allowed the local authorities the freedom to function.

He clarified, nonetheless, that the LGAs are working together with the state government to facilitate the efficient operation of activities, improve welfare for the workers, and promote good governance at the community level.

“It is noted that the state has recently established the State Economic Council, led by Emmanuel Akabe, the Deputy Governor of the state.”

The Economic Council advised that area council employees undergo immediate screening to identify ghost workers and confirm the true number of staff.

“The screening was essential due to the inflated salaries of employees regardless of retirement, death, and service transfer.”

“The screening will assist the new officials at the local government level in preparing for the disbursement of the N70,000 minimum wage and other welfare matters,” he stated.

The SSA also mentioned that the government had eliminated the joint account system and stated that the funding for the area councils goes directly into their accounts.

He also mentioned that the Revenue Service Board is working with the LG Chairmen to enhance the internal revenue of their councils in accordance with the local government regulations of the state.

Regarding the recent gunman attack in the Tatara community of Karu LGA, he mentioned that “The governor had released N200 million for the establishment of the military camp to protect the people in the area and its environs.

“Security is a topmost priority of this administration and the governor will do everything possible to ensure the protection of lives and property everywhere in the state,” Ahemba added.

On the rumour appointment of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), the governor’s aide called on the public to disregard the rumour in its entirety.

He explained that the governor is consulting and would soon make names of new Commissioners and the SSG public.
