ThankGod Chilaka scored Ikorodu City’s first-ever goal in the Nigeria Premier Football League, but they still remain winless in the league after losing 2-1 against Nasarawa United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
It was also the first victory of the season for the visitors, thanks to two superb goals by NPFL leading top scorer Anas Yusuf and Kabir Balogun.
Like their visitors, Ikorodu City came into the game looking for their first win, and more worthy of note is their inability to register a goal in their previous three matches.
While the likes of Ayomide Cole and Chilaka had chances to make history for the newly promoted side, Nasarawa United hit the post through Balogun, and it was the visitors who took the lead just before halftime, courtesy of Yusuf, who unmarked after being freed on a quick counter by a teammate and slotted past the Ikorodu City goalkeeper for his fifth goal of the season.
There was however enough time for an Ikorodu City response before the break, thanks to Chilaka, who rose high to head home a cross from captain Waliu Ojeyote.
Like they did in their midweek loss against Rangers International, Ikorodu City resumed the second half with tenacity but weren’t clinical enough in front of goal.
They would rue their chances eventually as Balogun scored from a direct free kick midway through the second half of the game to secure the first win of the season for the Solid Miners.
The defeat leaves Ikorodu City languishing at the bottom of the table with just a point after four rounds of games.
Next for them is a trip to Plateau United in Jos.
