For the first time, the leadership of the National Assembly attended a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio led the National Assembly delegation, which included House Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas and other senior members.

The meeting, which took place on Monday, is believed to be part of efforts to address the proposed nationwide protests scheduled for August 1-10 against the economic hardships facing the country.

A source close to the Cabinet Office revealed that the invitation to the National Assembly leadership was impromptu.

“Their invitation was impromptu because they were not part of our agenda,” the source told BusinessDay.

The nationwide protests, driven by economic challenges and the high cost of living, have gained significant traction, prompting the government to take preemptive measures.

Meanwhile, the President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has summoned an emergency session of the upper legislative chambers ahead of the nationwide protest billed to kick off on August 1st to 10th.

Naija News reports that the Senate emergency session is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, July 31st.

An internal memorandum from the Senate Clerk has been issued regarding the matter.

The memo issued and signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Chinedu Francis Akubueze, said the senators were to make all necessary arrangements to attend as issues of national importance will be discussed.
