NASU, SSANU Suspends Nationwide Strike; NAAT To Proceed With Protest Over Withheld Salaries

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike, effective November 5, 2024.

The strike, which began due to the withholding of four months’ salaries, has now been paused, according to a circular signed by NASU’s General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU’s National President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim.

Despite the development, the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has confirmed that it will continue with its planned protest and picketing of the Federal Ministry of Finance.

NAAT’s demand focuses on the release of approximately 50% of withheld salaries for five months. The union issued a two-week ultimatum to the federal government on October 30, which will expire on November 13.

NAAT President, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma confirmed to Vanguard that members who have received one month’s salary out of the expected three remain committed to the scheduled protest unless the government fulfills its promises.

The union is firm in its stance, with Nwokoma indicating that the protest will proceed if the withheld salaries are not fully paid within the set timeline.
