The Niger Delta Development Commission has donated communication gadgets to the Rivers State Police Command to enhance the performance of operatives in combating crime and criminality across the state.

The commission also pledged to provide further support to assist the command in carrying out its functions more effectively.

The Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, handed over the gadgets to the police at the command’s headquarters in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. He explained that the donation underscores the partnership between the interventionist agency and security forces in the Niger Delta region.

Ogbuku stated that the donation was in response to a request from the command under the previous Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at boosting operational efficiency and maintaining peace in the state.

He said, “As we always say, without security, there is no peace, and where there is no peace, development cannot occur. As an interventionist agency, we must support the security agencies to maintain peace in the region, ensuring access to development.”

He praised the Nigerian Police Force for their efforts, particularly in the face of increasing crime rates during the latter part of the year, which is traditionally linked to the “ember months.”

“From September to now, we have not witnessed the usual crime surge. This is a testament to the dedication of the police, especially during a time traditionally associated with high crime,” he noted.

Ogbuku also commended the police for their sacrifices, stating, “When we are asleep, you are out there protecting us. The best we can do is support you in your work. This equipment will enhance the police force’s ability to secure Rivers State. We intend to extend similar support to the other eight commands in the Niger Delta region.”

He further explained that the NDDC will provide Closed-Circuit Television cameras for the police commands, as it has done for the Department of State Services, to enhance state security. He also urged for greater collaboration and intelligence sharing between agencies.

Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Mohammed, thanked the NDDC for its donations, stating that they would serve as a morale booster for the officers. Represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Samuel Erale, he noted that the equipment would also improve the security and surveillance capabilities of the command.

“The provision of this equipment has given us 80% coverage of communication across the state. It has made it much easier for us to coordinate and monitor crime,” Mohammed added.

He also expressed gratitude for previous donations, including residential quarters, barracks, and vehicles for senior officers.

Olatunji Disu, the former Commissioner of Police for Rivers State who initiated the request for assistance, thanked the NDDC for honouring its commitment. Speaking via Zoom, he said, “What you have done for us today will never be forgotten because communication is key in policing. We came to you with our problems, and you responded. I assure you that with this support, our officers are dedicated and committed to their duties.”

Some of the gadgets donated include repeaters, base sets, walkie-talkies, and a rehabilitated mast.
