Niger: Police to enforce 3rd party insurance for vehicle owners from February 1

Niger State Police Command has announced that it will commence enforcing the compulsory third-party insurance policy for vehicle owners nationwide, beginning February 1, 2025.

The Command warned that failure to comply will result in the impoundment of vehicles, and the driver will be prosecuted accordingly.

The Command, in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the directive is in line with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 3 (1) (2) of the Motor Vehicle (Third-Party Insurance) Act, which mandates all vehicle owners to have third-party insurance before operating their vehicles on public roads.

The PRO stated that third-party insurance provides protection against damages to third parties caused by an insured vehicle, covering physical injuries, property damage, and death.

According to the statement, “It is important to state that third-party insurance offers protection against damages to the third party caused by an insured vehicle, which covers physical injuries, damages to property and death.

“Therefore, it is meant for the good of the people when an innocent person is injured or his property is damaged by a vehicle, such a victim stands to be compensated or indemnified.”

The police advised members of the public/motorists to abide by this provision, while assuring of high professionalism in the enforcement.

“We regret any inconvenience this might cause, but your maximum cooperation will be appreciated,” the Command added.
