The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revealed that Nigeria has not made any funding request from them.
The director of the African department at the (IMF), Abebe Aemro Selassie, stated this during a press briefing in Washington DC.
Selassie was responding to a question on speculations within Nigeria’s business circle that the government is considering going to the fund for financing.
“No, there has not been a request for funding from the IMF in Nigeria.
“To just be very clear, this is also a question that has come up in the context of some other countries. If and when countries turn to us, we hope that they do so having a very clear plan of how they want all kinds of economic reforms they want to pursue.
“And turning to us would be a way to help reduce the funding costs that they face,” Selassie said.
The IMF director said it is the right of every country that is in good standing with the organisation to borrow and have access to the “concessional financing that we provide. But there is no request for funding from Nigeria at the moment”.
‘No Sensible Person Will Believe This’ – Okonjo-Iweala Speaks On Helping Biafra Republic Govt Secure $57.5 Billion Loan From World Bank, IMF
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has dismissed claims of helping the Biafra Republic Government secure a $57.5 billion loan from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Naija News reports that this follows a tweet credited to the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government, Simon Ekpa.
The social media post claimed Okonjo agreed to secure a loan for the secessionist group to help form their government after December 2024.
In response, Okonjo, in a post via her X handle, described the statement as false and urged those seeking to misuse her name to desist from it.
She wrote, “I know no sensible person will believe what is contained in the outrageous tweet below but in these troubled times it is important to underscore that the statement is false. Again I enjoin all those seeking to misuse my name to desist!”
Reacting to the post, Simon Ekpa wrote, “Dear Madam @NOIweala, i never tweeted such, it is even surprising that you can tweet this because your name was mentioned, we have been tweeting about the Nigeria terrorism against your people and you never responded nor showed any remorse.
“Here you are, defending what nonentities did with your name, but have been mute about all the killings by the government you served. I congratulate you for always defending yourself and your integrity, even when they are photoshopped. It shows you are really a mother. Thank you for defending yourself but i never tweeted such thing, it is false and fake.”
