Nigeria to save N10b from reduced COP29 expenditures — Presidency

The Presidency has announced plans to cut down on federal government spending during the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November.

According to Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, the government’s cost-saving measures will help Nigeria save approximately N10 billion from the 11-day event. Ngelale revealed these details during a press briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.

The cost-cutting initiative follows concerns about excessive spending at COP28 in Dubai last November. Among the key measures, the government will no longer hire a pavilion, which costs $5,000, and will instead establish a delegation office within the venue.

Additionally, the government plans to cut back on unnecessary consultancy fees and subcontracts for lighting and other technical provisions, which will now be directly handled by the National Council on Climate Change. These measures will also include the implementation of a climate accountability and transparency portal to ensure efficient use of resources.
