The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, has revealed that the monthly salary for Ministers in Nigeria is less than ₦1 million.

This revelation from Abubakar Bagudu comes amidst the hunger protests in major cities across Nigeria, further stirring the discussion on the country’s governance and economic issues.

In an interview with Channels TV on Saturday, August 3, Bagudu stated that the cost of governance in the country has been a growing concern and acknowledged the demands of citizens, particularly about the reduction of the cost of governance.

Bagudu mentioned that the government is attentive to these concerns and intends to continue dialogue with citizens to address economic challenges.

He pointed out that the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission determines ministerial salaries like those of other public officers.

Bagudu also mentioned that he uses a non-official vehicle while noting that he was uncertain about the specifics of defined allowances for Ministers.

The former Kebbi state governor said: “The cost of governance is worrisome, particularly me because I see how the kitty is allocated so I know that we are not anywhere near where we want to be. So any savings from any quarter is important. Ministers line any public officers is determined by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission. I have one official vehicle, but I don’t use it; I have a vehicle I love using.

“In terms of how much Ministers are paid is less than a million Naira. I don’t know of any defined allowance that the Minister has but I might be wrong.”
