‘Nigerian Sector That Recorded Lowest Bribery Rate In 2023’

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has made reference to a recent study indicating that doctors and nurses working in the public health sector have the lowest incidence of bribery among various public service areas in the country.

During a press conference in Abuja, NMA President, Professor Bala Audu talked about the results of this study.

Naija News reports that the study released recently and titled “Corruption in Nigeria: Patterns and Trends Third Survey on Corruption as Experienced by the Population”, was carried out by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) together with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The study revealed that 30% of adults seeking medical services from public sector healthcare professionals did not have to pay bribes or were not requested to do so.

However, the study also showed that 4% of adults who sought medical attention from public sector healthcare professionals either paid bribes or were asked to do so.

Remarking on this report, Audu reiterated the NMA’s goal to eliminate this 4% from the equation, reinforcing the organization’s mission and keeping the audience focused on the desired outcome.

He highlighted the significance of this low bribery rate, given the extensive interaction doctors and nurses have with the general public.

This underscores the impact of the study’s findings and their relevance to the audience.

“This is the least figure for bribery in all public sectors in this country. It is an attestation to the integrity within the health sector of the country,” the NMA Presdent said.

He emphasized that even though the percentage is low, the organization will strive harder to eradicate bribery completely.

Additionally, he highlighted that the study specifically targeted adult Nigerians, neglecting the substantial care given by medical professionals to children.

Audu urged the NBS and UNODC to carry out research that showcases public sector workers who go above and beyond to deliver services despite obstacles and limited resources.

He observed that it is typical for medical professionals to donate money to assist underprivileged patients, a gesture that is frequently disregarded.
