Nigerian University Non-Academic Unions, SSANU, NASU Begin Indefinite Strike Thursday

This follows the expiration of a two-week strike notice, over their four months salaries, and the unpaid 13 months salaries to the Abia State University workers.

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) are planning to shut down campuses by Thursday. 

The two unions declared on Tuesday to embark on an indefinite strike action from Thursday, July 4.

This follows the expiration of a two-week strike notice, over their four months salaries, and the unpaid 13 months salaries to the Abia State University workers.

SSANU at a briefing in Abuja said beyond the witheld and unpaid salaries, most institutions still owe between three and six months of the N35,000 wage award even as it accused the Federal government of being slow and dodgy with regards to announcing a new national minimum wage

Other issues the unions concerned about are the limited number of educated individuals in the reconstituted Boards of Federal tertiary institutions and the proliferation of State Universities, amidst poor funding of existing ones.

The unions are equally demanding quick fix to the nation’s security challenges, following the killing of a Deputy Vice Chancellor, of the Uthman Dan Fodio University in Sokoto.

SaharaReporters recently noted that academic lecturers, ASUU, planned to down tools over allegations of neglect by the federal government.
