NLC tasks govt on housing, infrastructure

The Lagos State chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Sessi Funmi has urged the state governments to prioritise affordable housing and improved infrastructure for workers residing in Lagos.

Speaking with The PUNCH, Sessi highlighted the unique challenges faced by Lagos workers due to high accommodation costs, inadequate housing, and limited infrastructural support in neighbouring Ogun State.

Pointing the way forward in respect of housing, Sessi called on the Lagos government to partner with private investors to develop housing estates in underutilised areas such as Badagry, Ikorodu, and Epe.

“Workers want to live within Lagos, but when houses become unaffordable, they are forced to move to Ogun State. Yet, Ogun State benefits from our taxes without making corresponding investments in infrastructure,” she stated.

Sessi did not mince words about Ogun State’s shortcomings, describing the state’s road networks as “terrible and bad,” particularly in areas like Akute and Abeokuta.

She criticised Ogun State for neglecting infrastructure while benefiting from Lagos-based workers’ taxes.

“You are just collecting these taxes without providing infrastructure. This neglect is unacceptable,” she declared.

Beyond housing and infrastructure, Sessi also called on workers to act with integrity and accountability.

She admonished those aiding corruption and malpractice, urging them to reflect on their actions.

“Let us do the right thing. Many of us have thrown our family names into the mud, and our children are suffering the consequences of a broken system,” she lamented.

As 2025 begins, Sessi emphasised the importance of collaboration between workers and the government to ensure industrial harmony and progress.

She expressed optimism that Lagos State would deliver on its budget promises for the year, urging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to follow through on infrastructure and housing commitments.
