The Yobe State Police Command has denied rumours circulating about an attack on the three Divisional Police Headquarters, Area Command Office, or Tactical Units within Damaturu metropolis by suspected armed robbers.
In a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Yobe State Command, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, he said that the viral message on social media was unfounded and misleading.
SP Abdulkarim said only minor criminal activities like house trespass, burglary, and theft were occurring in a few residential areas, which the Command has marked for attention and designed strategies to curb in the nearest future.
According to the statement, the crimes often result from residents’ neglect of security consciousness, allowing easy access to hoodlums in their surroundings.
“Our records show that most perpetrators are either residents or led by syndicate members from other areas.”
He added, “To set the record straight, robbery involves the use of force or arms and direct engagement with the person or dwelling, which is not the case in these incidents.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Ahmed, stresses his commitment to ensuring security and safety in the state and emphasises collective responsibility.
“He further encourages you to do your part by establishing local measures in your communities and houses against hoodlums around you and informing us of criminal hideouts, suspicious movements, and likely perpetrators.”
The PPRO also further quoted CP as saying, “We encourage reporting complaints or addressing them in writing to the nearest police station or visiting the command headquarters.”
