No Police Officer Was Shot During Protest – Katsina Police Command

Katsina State Police Command has said no personnel of the command was shot during the hunger protest on Friday, as speculated on social media.

The police’s statement followed a video trending on X which alleged that a police officer fired a shot towards peaceful protesters; unfortunately, his colleague was hit by the live bullet.

Katsina State Police Command said its personnel have maintained utmost professionalism in the management of the hunger protest.

A Statement signed by the command’s public relations officer, ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, advised Nigerians to disregard the trending video.

Aliyu said security personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) fell from a patrol vehicle not police personnel. He added that the victim had been admitted to hospital.

The statement read, “The Katsina State Police Command wishes to address a misleading viral video circulating on social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly known as Twitter), of a security agent lying motionless on the ground, alleged to have been shot dead by a police officer while trying to disperse protesters in Katsina. The video is manipulated and taken out of context, as there was no such shooting incident throughout the command during the protest.

“The fact is that the security agent shown in the video is an officer of the NSCDC who fell from a patrol vehicle due to an accident involving the vehicle at the scene of the protest. He was immediately rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital (formerly Federal Medical Center), Katsina, where he was treated and discharged.

“We call on members of the public to disregard this misinformation and always verify information through official channels.

“Furthermore, we assure them of the strength of our synergy with sister security agencies in the state as we work together to maintain public safety and order and the highest level of professionalism in the discharge of our duties, and we will continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and stability in Katsina State.”
