The Bayelsa State Directorate of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has partnered with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the European Union (EU) to campaign against the use of illicit substances.
The agencies, which noted that drug abuse has caused severe mental health, depression and anxiety, spoke at the NOA public enlightenment campaign in Bayelsa.
Speaking, the state Director, Mrs Grace Olobio, emphasised the consequences of drug abuse on mental and physical health, social relationships, and productivity, saying that awareness was needed to promote early intervention strategies across communities in Bayelsa.
According to her, substance misuse poses serious risks to individuals’ well-being, families, and the larger society.
She said: “Drug abuse and illicit substance use can lead to devastating outcomes—ranging from addiction and organ damage to depression and the destruction of families.
“We must confront this challenge with urgency and compassion,” she said. She noted that young people remain particularly vulnerable, outlining several tell-tale signs of substance abuse, including increased tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, neglect of responsibilities, and loss of control over usage patterns.
Olobio encouraged those affected to seek help through professional counselling, rehabilitation, and support groups like Narcotics Anonymous.
“Substance abuse is not a moral failing—it’s a medical issue that requires structured support and treatment,” she said.
The campaign continued across schools, community centres, and youth hubs in the state, as part of a broader effort to combat drug-related challenges and foster safer, healthier communities in Bayelsa.
