The Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has apprehended a 22-year-old security guard for allegedly vandalising armoured cables for a streetlight construction project at the University of Ilorin.
The suspect, Idris Ibrahim Kayode, was reportedly employed as a private security guard at the university.
He was caught in the early hours of Wednesday while allegedly tampering with the cables within the university premises.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ayoola Michael (ASC 1), the suspect was said to have been apprehended by local vigilantes at about 1:33 a.m. on Wednesday, 11 December 2024.
“The suspect was caught red-handed vandalising armoured
cables being used for the streetlight project at the University of Ilorin.
“He was immediately handed over to the NSCDC for further investigation,” the statement read.
The Commandant of the Kwara State NSCDC, Dr Umar Muhammed, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter.
Ayoola confirmed that once the investigation is concluded, the suspect will be charged in court.
“The protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure remains a core mandate of the NSCDC, and we will not hesitate to prosecute anyone found sabotaging government assets,” the PRO added.
Muhammed also used the opportunity to urge residents of Kwara State to support the efforts of security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and assisting in ridding the state of criminal elements.
The NSCDC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and ensuring that offenders face the full weight of the law.
