NSCDC foils bandits’ attack on headquarters in Nasarawa

Operatives of Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have repelled an attempted attack on its headquarters in Lafia by suspected bandits.

Confirming the development, yesterday, spokesperson for the command, Jerry Victor, said an unspecified number of the gunmen invaded the headquarters of the corps in the early hours of yesterday.

He said the gunmen, who came in large numbers with iron rods, attempted to break some parts of the command’s fence to gain entry.

According to him, operatives of the NSCDC swiftly responded by opening fire on the hoodlums whose mission was to release some high-profile criminal suspects, including the informants of kidnappers in the command’s custody.

Victor disclosed that no casualties were recorded during the gun duel with the attackers, and that calm had been restored.

Also, the spokesman disclosed that the command detained five “notorious suspects” involved in various crimes. These included two informants connected to the kidnapping of the 82-year-old father of former state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Daniel Umaru Lagi.

Mr Lagi’s father was killed by his abductors even after a ransom had been paid.

There has been an upsurge in robbery and kidnappings in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

This has led to a restriction of movement for motorcycles and tricycles between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. by local council authorities.
