NUJ @ 70: Akpabio To Grace Anniversary, Urges Media Innovation, Ethical Reorientation

As the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) marks its 70th anniversary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on the union to embrace innovation and reorientate its members to uphold ethical journalism, promote national unity, and confront the challenges of misinformation in the digital age.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by a delegation of the NUJ on Wednesday, led by its National President Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, Senator Akpabio expressed deep concern over the spread of misinformation on social media and urged journalists to recommit to accuracy, fairness, and national development.

“For us, we believe in maintaining a cordial relationship with the press, and we always advise that the media must conduct self-evaluation and reorientation,” Akpabio said.

He stressed that journalism must evolve beyond antagonism toward government and instead become a partner in progress, particularly in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Initially, the press was established to fight against colonialism when foreigners ruled Nigeria,” Akpabio noted.

“Even after independence, some sections of the press continue to fight government, forgetting that our goal is national progress. The colonial masters are gone. It’s time for reorientation.”

While acknowledging the contributions of legendary pioneers like Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Anthony Enahoro, the Senate President emphasized the need for journalism to match its proud legacy with responsible reporting in today’s fast-paced digital landscape.

“Breaking news should not break society,” he warned. “Let’s focus on innovation and initiatives, embrace new technology, and use our platforms to educate the public about the benefits of good journalism.”

He also lamented the perception that bad news sells better than good news and called on the NUJ to help change this mindset.

“It’s worrisome that some feel good news does not sell while bad news does. You have to advise us on how we can partner together,” he said.

Akpabio reaffirmed the Senate’s willingness to collaborate with the media and pledged full support for the NUJ’s ongoing reforms.

“We must love one another, promote togetherness, and work together to secure the nation. The government cannot do it alone,” he added.

He assured the NUJ of his attendance at the union’s 70th anniversary celebration scheduled for June 21, 2025.

“I welcome you, congratulate you, and assure you of the Senate’s full cooperation. On June 21, you will celebrate 70 years of journalism, and I want to be there,” he said.

Earlier in the visit, NUJ President Comrade Alhassan Yahaya highlighted the need for greater collaboration between the union and the National Assembly, particularly through the introduction of the proposed Media Enhancement Bill.

“This initiative is designed not only to advance journalism but also to holistically support journalists nationwide,” Yahaya explained.

“We eagerly anticipate your esteemed support when this crucial bill comes before the Senate.”

Yahaya also used the occasion to formally invite Senator Akpabio to the NUJ’s upcoming anniversary celebration and to highlight the union’s legacy of integrity and resilience.

“Since our founding on March 15, 1955, the NUJ has been a steadfast pillar in Nigeria’s media landscape,” he said.

“Our anniversary celebration will reflect on our history and honor past National Presidents, Secretaries, and distinguished individuals who have contributed immensely to democracy and national development.”

Comrade Yahaya commended Senator Akpabio for his legislative contributions and commitment to democratic growth.

“The key legislations enacted under your leadership have propelled our democratic progress, shaping a more robust and responsive governance structure,” he said.

Also present during the visit were members of the NUJ National Executive Council and state officials, including Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, and members of her executive team.
