Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, emphasized the need for more funding to nurture grassroots sports following the conclusion of the indoor events at the Agege Stadium Indoor Sports Hall.

Over four days of fierce competition, young talented athletes showcased their talents. Notably, 14-year-old Abdulsalam Abdulateef reached the finals in the U15 table tennis but ultimately lost, highlighting the emerging sports talent at the grassroots level.

In the boxing finals, Sulaimon Yekini and Wasiu Ganiyat were crowned the King and Queen of the ring in the 52kg category, each winning N250,000.

Adebakin Tobi triumphed in a thrilling U19 boys’ table tennis final against Okiki Ogunsakin, securing N250,000, while Semilore Kehinde won the U19 boys’ title and also took home N250,000.

In the U19 Girls category, Aishat Rabiu claimed victory and N250,000. Musibau Fausat won the U15 Girls event, receiving N250,000.

In chess, Ayodele Stephen Damilola won the highest prize of N500,000, with Okani Miracle and Chukwuka Stephen earning N300,000 and N200,000, respectively.

In Scrabble, Alayode Israel took home N400,000 as champion, followed by Akinbami Titilayo and Ogunnaike David, who won N300,000 and N100,000, respectively.

In his remarks, “Over the past 4 days, these athletes have shared many unforgettable moments, putting their best and showing the zeal to become champions,” Obasa said.

“ We are overwhelmed by the youthfulness of the athletes who took part in the Obasa Games and the talented ones who won various cash prizes.

“We saw 14-year-old Abdulsalam Abdulateef, who had an unbeaten run into the final and became a favourite for gold but lost the final game in the U15 table tennis event.

“Same with an 11-year-old chess player who lost in the semi-final. The Obasa Games has shown that there are a lot of sporting talents in the grassroot waiting to be tapped. We hope to improve in the next edition as we have set a standard for the games.”
