Wife of Edo State Governor, Betsy Obaseki, yesterday, flagged off the sale of 500,000 pre-paid metres to residents across the state.
She said that the initiative is geared towards making electricity metres affordable for residents, eliminating estimated billings and boosting Small and Medium Scale businesses.
Mrs. Obaseki, who disclosed this during the flag-off ceremony held in Benin City, noted that the state government is passionate about ending the suffering of the people, hence the initiative.
The Edo First Lady also lauded the Benin Electricity Distribution Company and other partners for their collaboration, noting that there should be adequate awareness of the registration processes to enable people to key into the project.
Also, Commissioner for Mining, Energy, Oil and Gas, Enaholo Ojiefo, said that the project is part of Obaseki administration’s drive for a 24-hour power supply in the state. Ojiefo stressed that residents who apply and make payments through the dedicated portal would be connected within two weeks.
According to him, the distribution processes would be 100 per cent transparent for Edo people. He said: “There is a committee, which includes local council chairmen, and there would be registration centres across the 18 local councils.”
“The state government also intends to use solar power in places of worship, hospitals, hotels, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs.) We will build solar power for them, so they can pay after four years.”
