Obi Reacts To Amawbia Building Collapse

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has commisserated with the families that lost their loved ones following two-storey building that collapsed in Amawbia, Anambra State.

The former governor of Anambra State described the incident as unfortunate. He called on the state government to provide necessary support to families and traders affected by the building collapse.

He further advised the Governor Charles Soludo’s government to take measures to prevent such tragidies in the future.

I am deeply saddened by the news of the unfortunate event of building collapse that claimed lives and caused injury at Amawbia Market yesterday. My heartfelt condolences go out to the government of Anambra state as well as families who have lost their loved ones, and I pray for the quick recovery of those injured. During times of such immense tragedy and sorrow, it is important that we come together as a community to support one another.

“I urge the state government to provide all necessary assistance to the affected families and to take immediate steps to prevent such tragedies in the future. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” Obi said in a statement on Saturday.

A two-storey building collapsed at the Ekeoyibo market, Amawbia in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Thursday.

Anambra State Police Command, Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, on Friday, said two persons were found dead after resecue operations were concluded.

Ikenga added that some trapped victims were rescued alive and are receiving treatments in the hospital.

Ikenga said, “Two persons were found dead after rescue operations were concluded. Some other trapped victims, rescued alive are still receiving treatment at the hospital.

“Rescue operations were concluded late in the night by the state emergency responders with the supervision of security operatives who maintained law and order.”
