Observers commend high voter turnout, peaceful Ondo governorship election

The Coalition of INEC Accredited Civil Society Domestic Election Observer Groups has praised stakeholders for the peaceful conduct of last Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress the winner, with 366,781 votes, defeating other candidates in the contest.

Speaking in Akure, the state capital, on Tuesday, the group’s leader, Engr. Muhammad Hashidu, expressed satisfaction with the electoral process, stating that it adhered to international standards of fairness and transparency.

Hashidu noted that the coalition deployed field monitors across all 18 local government areas, who reported positive experiences of the exercise.

He said, “The INEC officials arrived promptly at polling units, with voting and accreditation beginning as early as 8:00 am in many locations.

“The early arrival of INEC officials, coupled with the smooth distribution of materials, played a pivotal role in ensuring that the election commenced on time across the 203 wards. This allowed for simultaneous accreditation and voting, which was completed without disruptions.”

He added, “There was an impressive voter turnout compared to previous elections in the state, with long queues forming early at polling stations. Voters displayed enthusiasm in exercising their civic rights, and the orderly process was maintained throughout the day. This is commendable.”

However, the group recommended increased grassroots advocacy and voter education, in collaboration with civil society organisations, to further improve voter awareness and participation in future elections.
