OGSIEC Denies Releasing Schedule For Ogun LG Elections

The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has distanced itself from a purported schedule for local government elections that has been circulating, indicating that these elections would be held in October.

This decision was made in response to a news report that was circulating online, purportedly originating from the commission and titled ‘Notice of the Year 2024 Local Government Elections In Ogun State.’

The viral reports quoted the commission’s chairman in the state, Babatunde Osibodu, as saying that the elections for the 20 local governments and 236 Wards in the state will be held on the 26th of October, 2024.

However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, the state electoral commission clarified that there has been no definitive date set for the execution of these elections.

It characterized the information being circulated as the work of individuals peddling fake news, urging the public to dismiss it.

The statement underscored that the commission will ensure the public is adequately informed regarding the scheduling of the elections for the third tier of government.

It also highlighted the state government, under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, is acutely aware of the significance of local governments as the third tier of government and the imperative to facilitate the election of democratically elected representatives.
