Ogun steel company investigates factory worker’s death

The management of KAM Steel Integrated Company along the Sagamu-Ogijo Expressway, on Monday, said it had launched an investigation into an industrial accident that claimed one Yahaya Ibrahim.

Ibrahim, 27, who was a worker for one of the company’s contractors, was said to have died after an engine roller crushed him.

The company, however, said Ibrahim was not operating the machine he got entangled in which eventually claimed his life, saying that the company’s investigation would help to establish what happened.

The company’s Head of Human Capital, Tunde Badejo disclosed this in a statement sent to journalists.

Badejo described the incident as purely industrial involving only the deceased, pointing out that no one else was involved.

Ibrahim was said to have been operating the engine roller when he suddenly slipped and fell onto the roller in the early hours of Sunday and efforts by other staff members to rescue him were unsuccessful, as the roller reportedly crushed him to death.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, on Sunday, confirmed the incident and stated that the deceased’s body had been taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital morgue, Sagamu.

The statement partly read, “The management of KAM Steel Integrated Company has clarified that the staff of one of the contractors to the company, Yahaya Ibrahim, who reportedly got entangled with the moving parts of one of the company’s machines at its factory along the Sagamu-Ogijo Expressway in Ogun State and died, was not operating the machine at the time of the incident.

“The incident which happened late in the evening (on Saturday) at about 9:12 pm was promptly reported to the DPO of the area.

“The management of the company has further clarified that there is an ongoing thorough investigation of the incident with possible post-mortem report to situate the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The statement added that “this unfortunate incident is purely industrial involving only the deceased. No one else was involved.”

While commiserating with the deceased’s family, the company appealed to the public to ignore any hearsay and unverified reports pending the outcome of the investigation and possible post-mortem reports on the incident.
