Ogun State government has counselled residents on the importance of proper environmental sanitation and hygiene, particularly shunning improper waste disposal.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr Ola Oresanya gave the admonition when he led a combined team of the Environment Family in the state on a tour of new road infrastructure in the border towns of Ojodu-Abiodun, Denro, Ishasi, Alagbole-Akute, Lambe and Ijoko.
Oresanya urged residents and the Community Development Association of the towns to monitor and ensure that wastes are not dumped in the drainage channels.
If the drainage channels are clogged, he said there is a tendency for wastewater to constantly affect the newly constructed roads.
“The CDA, as the first responder, must equally prevent residents, especially those on the roadsides, from placing planks and containers on the drainage channels in the name of creating spaces for home trading which will reduce the lifespan of the drainage channels as well as inhibit free flow of erosion during raining season,” Oresanya said.
He urged the residents to have covered bins in their houses and patronize certified waste collectors for proper waste collection.
Oresanya warned against patronising waste cart pushers who are prone to improper waste disposal.
He also warned against channelization of waste from homes to the road infrastructure, which, he said, will reduce its lifespan.
Oresanya promised that the setbacks of the new road would be cleaned up and beautified.
He also urged retail and wholesale outlets to shun noise pollution.
