African Games gold medallist Chidi Okezie is confident that the members of Nigeria’s men’s 4x400m relay quartet will bring the baton home on good time as they regroup for the heats on Friday (today), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Okezie didn’t make the semi-finals of the men’s 400m event, placing fifth in a time of 46.92s in the repechage.
He had narrowly missed out on automatic qualification in the event, running a time of 45.52s but placed fourth in the first round.
His compatriot Samuel Ogazi progressed to the final, and Okezie believes their individual qualities will propel the team.
They will be joined by two of Dubem Amene, Dubem Nwachukwu, and Emmanuel Ojeli.
It’s great to finally run in the Olympics. It feels amazing. It was a great thing for the mixed relay; they broke the national record, which is an amazing feat,” Okezie said via Making of Champions.
“So for the men’s 4x400m, we have high hopes; everyone we have here could split 44s, maybe even faster.
“So once that comes together, everything works in God’s favour, and amazing things shall happen.”
Men’s 400m finalist, Ogazi, broke the 45s barrier three times during his execution and also set two personal bets.
He ran a new PB of 44.50s before smashing it during the semi-finals with a time of 55:41s. His 44.73s were, however, only good enough to earn him a seventh-place finish in the final.
