Olympics: LSU bids Ofili, five other alumni farewell

The Louisiana State University Track & Field programme has best wishes for Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili and four other alumni of the tertiary institution at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The institution conveyed its thoughts in a statement titled [email protected] on their Instagram page on Thursday.

Ranked 13th in 200 in the world, Ofili, 21, is joining Nigeria for her first trip to the Olympics, competing in the 100, 200, and 4×100. She heads into the Games as one of a few Nigerian medal hopefuls. She secured her place in the women’s 200m event in Paris after a stunning victory at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic at the James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Florida.

Other LSU alumni to vie for medals at the quadrennial sports fiesta are: Mondo Duplantis, a pole vaulter, world record holder, Olympic champion, and world champion who is making his second trip with Sweden; Thelma Davies, who is joining Liberia for her first trip to the Olympics competing in the 100 and 200; and Vernon Norwood, who will represent the USA in the 400m and his second time going to the Olympics to represent Team USA as part of the relay pool.

 Others are Aleia Hobbs, who is joining Team USA on the trip to Paris as a part of the women’s 4×100, making this her second Olympics’ appearance, and JuVaughn Krishna, popularly called Jaay Harrison, a high jumper on his second trip to the Games to represent the USA. He qualified by the Olympic standard of 2.33 m.

The international multi-sport event is scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024, with some competitions starting on July 24. Paris is the main host city, with events held in 16 other cities spread across Metropolitan France, plus one subsite in Tahiti, an island within the French overseas country and overseas collectivity of French Polynesia.
