The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, said he has not been invited to support Agboola Ajayi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State.
Wike emphasised the importance of being consulted before offering his backing in a media chat yesterday with select journalists, stating, “You do not just go and rush for what you are not called for. My party has not told me they need my support for their governorship candidate in Ondo.”
The minister recounted his previous experiences of party collaboration, noting that during the Bayelsa gubernatorial election, the PDP approached him to support the candidate who eventually won.
“I have his full support; when I mean support, I gave everything, and he won,” Wike said.
Wike, however, said that he was invited to support the PDP Candidate in Edo State and turned down an invitation to support Godwin Obaseki.
“I will not support Obaseki. Then they said if you will not support him, keep quiet, and I said I will keep quiet,” he said
While speaking about his relationship with Ajayi, he said, “I have not even seen him. The last time I saw the candidate was when I sponsored him to run against Eyitayo Jegede when he resigned as deputy governor to the late Akinwunmi Ambode.”
He expressed his disappointment over the need for more communication from party leadership regarding the Ondo election.
Wike also critiqued the current state of PDP’s leadership, declaring, “PDP has never had it this bad in terms of leadership, particularly from the chairman of the governorship forum.”
He stressed the need for proactive leadership and effective mobilisation of party members if the PDP hopes to reclaim power in Ondo State.
He concluded by calling for more significant commitment from the party, stating, “To be a leader, you must have the capacity to galvanise the people. You are an opposition party, not the ruling party; people should see that you are in a position to take over power.”
